A lot of food is wasted in America, where 40% of food is thrown away. In an effort to eliminate food waste, local programs enable volunteers to go to farms and glean after a harvest, saving food that would be thrown away or plowed under because it is not in good enough shape to sell.
A program in Washington pairs gleaning with AmeriCorps volunteers to pick up and distribute the waste. Local volunteers glean crops and transport food to a local food bank or soup kitchen, prep the food, and use it to feed senior citizens or low income communities.
