6/11/2008--Sedro Woolley, WA, USA..Max Alaways, 76, stands on the main street in Sedro Woolley. At the beginning of  of Route 20 heading east bound from I5 towards the Cascades, Sedro Woolley and region has seen a lot of changes in the past 70 years since the highway was built. Talking about the east side of the mountains that the highway takes drivers, Alaways says: '"It's totally different over there. I like to go the other way, towards the San Juans. There's nothing over there from Winthrop to Spokane. Nothing."..Highway 20, cutting through Washington State's Northern Cascades, is one of the last highways built in the state. The final stretch, connecting the west side to the east sides of the mountains wasn't completed until 1972. the road was one of the of the routes promoted by the Federal Writers Projects guides of the 1930s-1940s. ..©2008 Stuart Isett.
