12/29/2009--Langley, WA, USA..Larry Cheek works in the garage of his home on Whidbey Island, WASH. on his latest wood boat, the 'Nil Desperandum'. The design is the Winter Wren II by Sam Devlin of Olympia, WA. and will be 18 feet long when completed...It's a gaff-rigged cruising sailboat made of plywood/fiberglass composite construction. The woods used are okoume plywood, khaya mahogany, white oak, and vertical-grain fir. Cheek started work on the boat in Oct. '08 and has a projected launch date of June '11. He estimates 1,500-2,000 hours of work will go into the boat...Here Mr. Cheek is trimming and installing thin fir planks on the inside of the hull to form the interior walls of the hull...©2009 Stuart Isett.
