5/14/2002--Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. The Sapporo Dome in Japan's northern most prefecture of Hokkaido. The Dome was built for the upcoming World Cup and was designed by architect Hiroshi Hara (who also designed Kyoto Station). It is arguably the most advanced indoor stadium in the world. A "Hovering Soccer Stage," Sapporo Dome features the world's first air-floating, movable pitch system, which enables the whole soccer field (covered in natural lawn) to be moved into the dome, meaning that games can be played under the best conditions unaffected by the weather. ..Some critics have argued that the huge expense of the stadium will put enormous financial strain on the local economy and is yet another example of wasteful government spending..All photographs ©2003 Stuart Isett. All rights reserved. This image may not be reproduced without expressed written permission from Stuart Isett.
