9/30/2002--Funabashi, Japan..Shotaro Yoshioka, 21, (left) and Haruo Kikuchi, 36 right, share a laugh with other 'hikikomori' or shutins who come to Dr. Saito Tamaki's clinic at the Sofukai Sasaki Hospital about 30 minutes east of Tokyo in Funabashi. Hikikomori are usually young people who withdraw from society, often spending years inside their parents' homes, never venturing out.
