10/2/2008--Seattle, WA, USA..Edward Curtis photos of the Arctic Club members hang in Seattle?s Arctic Club Hotel. The building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was designed in 1916 by architect A. Warren Gould for members of the Arctic Club, veterans of the Alaskan Gold Rush. After a more than two-year renovation, it opened in July, 2008. Reminders of its history abound: Sepia photographs of the club?s founders line the walls behind the reception desk; the lobby-level Polar Bar, with its leather chairs fairly reeks of manly clubbiness; and on the building?s exterior, 27 walrus heads serve as polar caryatids.
