7/15/2005--Nanjie Village, Henan Province, China..In front of new free apartments for new residents in Nanjie village, a model communist village in the central province of Henan, a resident works a small garden which will produce vegetables for the collective. Nanjie collectivised its agricultural production and industry in the mid 1980s - when the rest of the country was doing the opposite, introducing market reforms put forward by former leader Deng Xiaoping. Although the teachings of the "Great Helmsman" serve as the moral compass for the 3,100 people of Nanjie, the real secret to its collective well-being is, well, capitalist: two dozen village enterprises manufacturing all sorts of things ? noodles, beer, pharmaceuticals. One even promotes "red tourism."..It continues to be run on Maoist egalitarian lines and has become something of a tourist attraction because of its staunch adherence to the values of the past..Photograph By Stuart Isett. All photographs ©2005 Stuart Isett. All rights reserved..Photograph By Stuart Isett. All photographs ©2005 Stuart Isett. All rights reserved.
