9/18/2008--Petersburg, Alaska, USA..A piece of glacier ice that has broken off during the Alaska summer and floated into Frederic Sound. The ice's deep blue color comes from the intense pressure under which it was created in the glacier which squeezes out any air from the water...Petersburg is on the north end of Mitkof Island, near the Tongass National Forest. A major fishing port, the town of 3500 is also a good jumping off point to see the Alaskan wilderness in south eastern Alaska. Petersburg can be reached on Alaskan Airlines via Seattle or nearby Juneau to the north...©2008 Stuart Isett. All rights reserved.
