1/14/2007--Leavenworth, WA, USA..Traditional German and Bavarian dishs at King Ludwig's, a German restaurant in Leavenworth. Leavenworth sits beside the Wenatchee River about 2 hours drive west of Seattle. Fifty years ago Leavenworth, like many other former logging boom towns across the Northwest, had boarded up buildings and a bleak future. Then a small group of visionaries landed on the idea of transforming the town into an Alpine theme town. Beginning in the 1960s facades on Front Street were made over in the style of a south German mountain town, and despite Central Washington's paucity of Germans, the Bavarian Village was born...Now tens of thousands gather near the gazebo and Wilkommen sign in a small central park each December for three consecutive weekends to witness the illumination of lights strung from leafless trees and gingerbread storefronts...Photograph ©2007 Stuart Isett. All rights reserved
