9/13/2012--Seattle, WA, USA..The Iron Chink at MOHAI...In 1903, the Iron Chink changed the production process for canned salmon. Before the Iron Chink, Chinese cannery workers manually butchered and canned salmon. This machine, however, cut the fish open, separated the fins, and cleaned out the guts. The Iron Chink drastically cut the processing time, while simultaneously taking away the jobs of Chinese workers....The Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) will open later in 2012 in the former Naval Reserve Training Center, or "Armory," in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood...Accredited by the American Association of Museums, MOHAI is "dedicated to enriching lives by preserving, sharing and teaching the diverse history of Seattle, the Puget Sound region and the nation."..Exhibits include Boeing B-1 seaplane (Boeing's first plane), the Rainier Brewing Company's old red "R" sign and Slo-Mo-Shun IV Hydroplane. MOHAI has around 4 million objects in the collection, including around 100,000 artifacts, and 1.5 million photographs, and extensive archives. Collections focus on Seattle's early settlement (ca. 1850) through present-day, and concentrate on the stories and achievements of Seattle's residents...©2012 Stuart Isett. All rights reserved.
