4/28/2004--Shanghai, China..Shanghai's Bishop Aloysius Jin, who leads the 140,000 official Catholics in Shanghai. Bishop Jin, 85, was imprisoned for 27 years, before and during the Cultural Revolution. He was ordained in 1945, studied theology in Europe, and returned to China in 1950. He was arrested in 1955 and did not see freedom again until 1982. The politics of modern China forces him to choose his allegiances: He can pledge loyalty to the pope or to Beijing, but not to both. The Vatican refuses to recognize the government in Beijing, and the government in Beijing ruthlessly suppresses Catholics who remain loyal to the Vatican...Photograph by Stuart Isett.©2004 Stuart Isett
