3/27/2004--Aksu, Xinjiang Province, China..Wang Huizhen (50) points to trees planted around his apple orchard. The area was once desert but has since been turned into farm land on the outskirts of Atsu, on the northern edge of China's Taklimakan Desert. The Taklimakan, the world's second largest desert, is located in northwest China, and the Chinese government is working on one of the largest tree planting projects ever to prevent the desert from expanding. The area is also home to recent Han Chinese immigrants to the region, many who have come to farm on land reclaimed from the desert...Photograph by Stuart Isett .©2004 Stuart Isett. All rights reserved
