7/3/2012--Seattle, WA, USA..Alex Landis raised her daughter Finn, 12, in the area west of Belltown dubbed West Edge (a designation that has yet to be embraced by those who live there) for most of the past 12 years. That makes her an exception to the trend of downtown-based parents migrating to leafier neighborhoods and suburbs, as their children get a little older. In 2000, 776 children under the age of 5 lived downtown. Ten years later, many families had moved away; only 394 children between 10 and 14 lived there. Downtown has the highest attrition rate of all Seattle neighborhoods for children under 5?by a long shot. ...With no neighborhood parks nearby, when Finn was younger she used to ride her tricycle in her mother's loft, now she mainly practices cartwheels....©2012 Stuart Isett.
