hikikomori_009.jpg
11/29/2002--Shiki City, Japan..A beam on sunlight strikes the face of 19 year old Dai Hasebe at 'Ayutaka', a free space created by Nobuyuki Minami for children who are bullied in school or are shut-ins. Dai has been a 'hikikomori', or shut-in, since he was 11, rarely venturing out of his family's apartment, instead spending all his time shut off from the world in the tiny apartment. Dai makes models to help keep himself busy..Experts estimate that at up to a million Japanese live as shut-ins as they hide from the social pressures of Japanese society...All photographs ©2003 Stuart Isett. All rights reserved. This image may not be reproduced without expressed written permission from Stuart Isett.
